Video: Meet Mr. Jackson, a Wheelchair Basketball Athlete and a Resident in our Independent Living Community

Did you know that according to the US Census Bureau 13% of the total population in the United States was reported as having a physical disability in 2012?  Let me say that another way—41.5 million people in 2012 suffered from a traumatic event or a disease that disabled them in one or more ways. These disabilities may have resulted from amputation, Spina bifida, Cerebral palsy, or a traumatic brain injury that left a person physically impaired and at disadvantages in their professional and personal lives.

Walton Foundation for Independence believes that a disability does not have to leave a person at a disadvantage.   We believe their physical disability does not define who you are and should not limit what you can do. The Walton Foundation for Independence has a bold mission: to inspire philanthropy to support programs and services that create an inclusive lifestyle for people with disabilities to live, work, and play.

For over 15 years, we have been supporting and sponsoring programs and services in Augusta, Georgia and our surrounding communities so that people with disabilities can:

  • Live  in accessible housing
  • Work using their abilities in jobs they love and
  • Play at leisure-time activities that are designed with them in mind.

We want to let you know about all of our programs and services by sharing stories with you in the form of videos, interviews, and powerful pictures.

Today, you will hear the story of a resident living in one of our accessible housing communities. These independent living facilities are made accessible for physical disabilities such as blindness, deafness, or for someone with impaired mobility (such as being in a wheelchair or using a walker). At our Harison Heights facility, this region’s only supported living community for people with disabilities, residents enjoy an independent lifestyle while receiving 24 hour care and a day program all in a personal home atmosphere.
